Our Checkerboard collection is a curated approach to a timeless motif. We’ve taken the guesswork out of the design process by pairing bestselling hand-mixed colors in four versatile sizes. Whether you choose our large-format 12×12 Natural Press tiles or our sheeted Original Ceramic mosaics, each piece is handcrafted in our American factories with a focus on enduring quality and slip-resistant performance.

We offer four distinct sizes to suit the scale of any project:

• 12×12: A classic large-format tile from our Natural Press line, ideal for expansive floor installations.
• 3×3, 2×2, and 1×1: These sizes are part of our Original Ceramic line and come pre-sheeted as mosaics for a seamless installation.

Absolutely, we encourage it. Seeing the colors in your project’s specific lighting is essential. You can order samples directly on the checkerboard page or product listing, and you will receive a 2×4 color sample of each color.

When you order checkerboard tiles you will receive square tiles in the size and colors of your choice, and you will receive an equal amount of each color. So for example, if you order 20 SqFt of 12×12 Manzanita and Salt Creek Matte, you will receive 10 SqFt of 12×12 Manzanita and 10 SqFt of Salt Creek. Please note, our mosaic checkerboard tiles (1×1, 2×2 and 3×3) will arrive sheeted.

While both are handcrafted in the USA, they utilize different manufacturing techniques:

• Original Ceramic (Aromas, CA): These tiles are made from extruded clay in a more labor-intensive manufacturing process, offering a more organic feel with slightly more color variation.
• Natural Press (Spokane, WA): Natural Press tiles are made from clay that’s milled into powder and pressed into molds, resulting in a more uniform look and a more accessible price point.

Our Natural Press Ceramic product line is freeze-proof and highly durable, so our 12×12 checkerboard tiles are an excellent choice for indoor and outdoor installations in any climate. Our Original Ceramic product line, including the 1×1, 2×2 and 3×3 checkerboard tiles, is recommended for interior use only.

Absolutely. This collection was designed with high-traffic and wet areas in mind. All tiles in our Checkerboard collection feature a slip-resistant matte finish that meets DCOF standards, making them a safe and sophisticated choice for residential and commercial bathroom floors, kitchen floors, entryways, mudrooms and more.

Yes. Our mosaic sizes (1×1, 2×2, and 3×3) are pre-sheeted in our California factory, which ensures aligned patterns and a seamless installation. Our 12×12 tiles offer a traditional installation experience for large-scale surfaces.
