Design Trends: Hexagon Tile Backsplash

Hexagon tile backsplash

Hexagons are a great shape because they can feel both modern and timeless depending on the size and color you pick. Plus it's the preferred shape for honeybees and who doesn't love that? While we're all very accustomed to seeing this popular shape in a bathroom setting, we especially love them in the kitchen. Ideal for both flooring and your backsplash, hexagons fit into an array of design styles. Here we're honing in on the backsplash to see how these six-sided tiles fit best.

Geometric shapes are a trend that's here to stay and there's no reason that hexagons shouldn't be up for consideration for your backsplash!

We love how this geometric shape makes for a clean, yet textured focal point in this bright kitchen:

Trim is something that you might have to consider if the edges of your hexagons will be exposed in your space. You can opt for 1x6 Flatliner pieces in the same glaze as your hexagons:

Or, another trim option is metal Schluter Strip (as shown in the backsplash below). Fireclay does not sell Schluter, but it comes in lots of different sizes and finishes. It can be a discreet trim option for pattern heavy spaces.

Larger hexagons work very well if you are extending your backsplash up past the standard upper cabinet height (18"). We think 4" or 6" hexagons look best in backsplash applications:

Contrasting your backsplash with your cabinetry can make an impactful statement. The backsplash is often regarded as the focal point of a kitchen so color choice goes a long way.

On the other hand, matching your backsplash to other accents in the kitchen creates an elegant uniformity, especially a light shade shade in a bright and airy kitchen.

We can't glaze the edges of our hexagons, but if they extend high enough, you can leave them raw for a more graphic edge detail:

Don't be afraid to go small with your hexagons. We love how sweet these mosaic 2" hex's look in this natural-inspired backsplash:

If you want to highlight the shape of your hexagons a bit more, simply choose a contrasting grout to your tile color:

Pro Tip: Whenever using a contrasting color to your grout, test first to make sure the pigments in your grout don't stain your tile. Additional grout release or sealant may help in stain prevention.

Hexagons look great in a blend of colors. For added interest, try an "ombre" lay by selecting a couple light to dark glazes:

Adding color to your ombre design creates even more visual intrigue.
