Do I need to return samples?
Do you make custom samples?
How do I order samples?
Enjoy 5 free, handcrafted color samples from any of our product lines (excluding Handpainted Samples – cost determined per pattern) when you talk to one of our expert Design Consultants – book an appointment here. Need more than 5? Each additional color sample is just $3/ea. We’ll ship your samples anywhere in the continental U.S. for $15 flat, no matter the size of your sample order. Are you a trade member? Join our Trade Program for free samples anytime.
How much does it cost?
Your first 5 color samples are on us when you speak with a Design Consultant (book an appointment here), and additional samples are $3/ea. Shipping within the continental U.S. is a flat $15, and $20 for 5 samples to Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada.
What if I live outside the U.S?
We are happy to send you samples! Shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada will be $20 for a set of 5 samples. If you live outside of the U.S. or Canada, please inquire with one of our Design Consultants and they can provide you with a shipping quote.
Are there minimum order quantities? Do you charge a fee for small orders?
Because every Fireclay order is custom-made, our factory undergoes a specific setup process for each product. Small Batch Fee: A $100 fee applies to individual line items under 25 sq. ft. * Minimums: While we don't have a strict "minimum" order size, this fee helps cover the labor and setup required for smaller, specialized runs. To provide the best value, we recommend consolidating your needs or ensuring your overage (15–20%) brings your total above the 25 sq. ft. threshold where possible.
Can I buy online?

Can I expedite my order?
Yes. If your project is on a tight timeline, we offer rush production options based on current factory availability. How to Inquire: Please contact your Design Consultant to check current availability and receive a custom rush quote. Please note that "expedited" refers to the production time at our factory; it does not automatically include expedited shipping speeds once the tile leaves our warehouse

Fireclay materials combine the character of handcrafted tile with the durability required for demanding commercial applications. Our dedicated Commercial Team has extensive experience supporting large-scale specifications, LEED certification requirements, and custom volume orders. Ready to start your specification? Do you offer special pricing for large commercial projects?
Yes. We offer competitive, flexible volume pricing for large-scale developments. Whether you are specifying tile for a boutique restaurant, a national hotel chain, or a 500-unit multi-family complex, our team is dedicated to keeping your project on schedule and on budget. How to get a quote: Please contact our Commercial Sales Team with your project details, including estimated square footage and timeline, for a custom volume quote.
Do you recommend ordering Attic Stock?
Yes. To ensure your project runs smoothly, we highly recommend adding at least 15% overage (also called "Attic Stock") to your order. Why it’s better to order extra now:
- Seamless Installation: Extra tile covers necessary cuts, corners, and any accidental breakage during the job.
- Avoid "Add-On" Fees: Ordering more tile later—what we call an Add-On—is significantly more expensive. Because we have to restart the custom production process for a small quantity, additional small-batch and shipping fees will apply.
- Color Consistency: Tile is made in batches. Ordering everything at once ensures your entire project comes from the same "lot" with a perfect color match.
- Future Repairs: Any leftover tile is your insurance policy for minor repairs or home updates years down the road.
How do I choose the right trim for my installation?
Selecting the right trim is essential for a polished, professional finish. We offer several options to cap exposed edges, transition between surfaces, or navigate corners: Bullnose: A classic rounded edge for a clean transition. V-Cap: Ideal for countertops and traditional edge finishes. Quarter Round: Perfect for corners or as a decorative accent. Schluter® Profiles: Modern metal strips for a sleek, contemporary edge. Because trim requirements vary by project, trim is currently unavailable for direct online checkout. Please contact our Design Consultants—they will ensure you have the exact pieces needed for your layout and will place the order for you.
How do I determine the right quantity of product selection for my project?
To ensure you have enough material for cuts, waste, and potential breakage, we recommend adding a minimum of 15% overage (also known as "attic stock") to your total square footage. For complex layouts—such as Herringbone, Chevron, or large-scale patterns—we recommend increasing your overage to 20%.
Why order overage?
- Installation Waste: Accounts for the custom cuts needed for corners and edges.
- Accidents: Covers any accidental breakage during transit or installation.
- Future Repairs: Having extra tiles from your specific production "lot" ensures a perfect match if you ever need to replace a tile years down the road.
If you are unsure about your measurements, our Design Consultants are available to provide expert guidance to ensure you order exactly what you need.
How do I purchase Fireclay Tile?
We make it easy to shop for tile with several ways to place your order:
- Online: Browse our collections and checkout directly on our website.
- Design Consultation: Partner with a Fireclay Tile Design Consultant or our Commercial Sales team for personalized expert guidance.
- In-Person: Visit one of our Showrooms nationwide to work one-on-one with an experienced designer.
While we are happy to assist with estimates, all final quantities must be verified by your installer, architect, or contractor. Because every project is unique, Fireclay Tile cannot be held responsible for discrepancies in final measurements. To account for cuts, waste, and breakage, we recommend the following overage: Standard Patterns: Minimum 15% overage. Complex Patterns (e.g., Herringbone): At least 20% overage. The specifier (the person selecting the tile) is responsible for ensuring Fireclay Tile is suitable for the specific project environment and existing conditions. Because installation and site conditions are beyond our control, Fireclay Tile is not responsible for issues resulting from improper installation, design, or environmental factors.
How does paying with ACH (eCheck) save me money?
Paying with ACH (eCheck) offers a win-win: it reduces our transaction costs, and we pass those savings directly to you and our community. Credit card companies charge us significant processing fees — up to 3% of each sale. By choosing to pay with ACH, you help us avoid these fees, and we, in turn, split the savings with you. You receive a 0.25% refund on your order, and we donate an equivalent amount to the Khai Lam Fireclay Tile Family Fund. This fund supports the creative and extracurricular passions of our employees and their families — a tradition we established to honor the legacy of one of our former employees, Khai Lam. Since its inception, the Give, You Get program has generated over $350,000 for this initiative, directly benefiting the people who handcraft our products.
I didn't order enough tile for my installation. Can I order more?
We understand that despite careful planning, projects can sometimes run short. Because small, custom runs require significant factory recalibration to match your original tile, the following terms apply:
- Pricing & Fees: Add-On orders are charged at full retail pricing and incur a $100 setup fee.
- Color & Size Variation: Due to the handcrafted nature of our products, we cannot guarantee an exact match to your original order. We will make every effort to get as close as possible to the original batch.
- Lead Times: Please reach out to us for the best lead time for an add on order.
- Rush Options: If you need your Add-On sooner, we may be able to accommodate you with a rush fee.
How to start: Contact your Design Consultant or Commercial Sales Representative immediately to determine the additional quantity needed and begin the production process.
Once an order is placed can I change it?
Because our tile is custom-made to order, we are unable to guarantee changes or cancellations can be made once your project has entered production. If you realize a change is needed, please contact us immediately. While we cannot guarantee adjustments, we will do our best to find a solution before your order hits the factory floor.
Do you charge sales tax?
Yes. Fireclay Tile collects applicable sales tax for orders shipped to the following states: Taxable States: AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NE, NV, NJ, NM, NY, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI, and WY.
How do I pay for my order?
We accept various payment methods, though we have a strong preference for ACH (eCheck) We also accept: Credit Cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Digital Wallets: Apple Pay and Google Pay. Please note: A convenience fee applies to all Credit Card, Apple Pay, and Google Pay transactions to help offset merchant processing costs. What is the "Give, You Get" Program? Instead of sending 2.7%–3.5% in transaction fees to credit card companies, we’d rather share those savings with you and our makers. When you pay via eCheck: You Get: A 0.25% rebate applied directly to your order at checkout. (is this up to date) We Give: We donate an additional 0.25% to the Khai Lam Fireclay Tile Family Fund, supporting our employees and their families. (Is this up to date?)
I have a resale certificate. How do I setup my account as tax exempt?
If you hold a valid Resale License and are exempt from sales tax, you can verify your license with us before placing your order. Please contact your Design Consultant or our Commercial team to have your tax exempt account setup.
What is micro-deposit ACH verification?
ACH payments are available to use when ordering through one of our Design Consultants who you can reach at 1−800−773−2226. ACH payments require a secure connection to your bank account. If your bank is not listed, you will establish connection using micro-deposits. Please refer to the following instructions.
- Micro-deposits You will receive two nominal deposits to your chosen bank account over the next two business days.
- Email Verification You will receive an email from Stripe asking you to verify the amounts. Once the micro-deposits have been applied to your account, verify use the link in this email to verify the deposits using a 6 digit code beginning in SM. These codes will be on your bank statement and attributed to the micro-deposits.
- ACH Payment Processing Once your account is verified, you can complete your payment. Please Note: The ACH process with Stripe can take up to four business days to settle. When a payment requires micro deposit verification that four day countdown begins after the verification is complete. Fireclay Tile does not store any customer banking information entered during the transaction.
When is payment due?
Because our products are custom-made to order, full payment is required upfront to begin production. Exceptions for Large Projects ($10,000+): For qualifying residential or commercial projects over $10,000, we can accept a 50% deposit to begin production, with the remaining 50% due upon completion. Note: While we love making tile, we aren't a bank. We do not offer financing or extended payment terms.
Are Quick Ship tiles different from Made-To-Order?
They are identical in quality and craftsmanship. Our Quick Ship collection features the same handcrafted, sustainably made tiles that define our Made-to-Order line—the only difference is the timeline. We keep our most popular colors and sizes in stock so they are ready to ship when you need them. While Quick Ship items leave our factory in 5 days or less, Made-to-Order lead times are calculated at checkout based on current production schedules.
Do you accept returns of Quick Ship tile?
Yes, Quick Ship tiles are eligible for return and refund (excluding shipping costs). Note: Please refer to our full Return Policy for details on restocking fees and timelines.
How long does it take to ship Quick Ship tile?
Quick Ship orders are processed and depart our factory within 5 business days. Once shipped, delivery windows vary by region; West Coast orders typically arrive fastest, while East Coast and international deliveries may take longer. You will see an estimated delivery date during the checkout process.
Is trim available in Quick Ship?
Yes. We offer select in-stock trim within our Foundations Collection. All other trim is Made-to-Order with standard lead times. For an immediate, consistent finish for non-Foundations tile, we recommend Schluter® metal edge trim. Note: We do not recommend pairing Made-to-Order trim with Quick Ship tiles. Since our tile is handcrafted, natural variations occur between batches. Because these items are pulled from different production lots, they will likely not be a perfect match.
What tiles do you have in stock?
Our Quick Ship assortment is updated frequently to reflect our most popular styles. We consistently offer a curated selection of field tiles, specialty shapes, and sheeted mosaics across our Ceramic, Brick, Glass, and Handpainted collections.
Where do you ship in-stock tile?
In-stock tile is available for online checkout within the continental U.S. Shipping to Hawaii, Alaska, or internationally? Contact us at support@fireclaytile.com or (800) 773-2226 to place your order.
Can I order add-ons or matching trim for Factory Sale items?
Because Factory Sale items are already produced, we are unable to offer color-matched add-ons or trim. In order to fulfill the needs of your project, it is recommended to purchase 20% overage due to the limited nature of our stock.
Can I return or replace Factory Sale items?
No. All Factory Sale items are Final Sale and ineligible for return. If your order is damaged during transit, we will issue a refund for the affected material. Please note that we cannot provide replacements at the discounted sale price; any new orders will be subject to standard pricing and lead times.
Can I sample Factory Sale items before purchasing?
No. Factory Sale items are first come, first served, and only available while inventory lasts.
How do I purchase Factory Sale tile?
You can browse our current selection here. If you have specific questions about a listing, please contact our team at support@fireclaytile.com.
What are Factory Sale items?
Factory Sale items include overstock, discontinued lines, or "second-quality" batches that don’t perfectly match our standard color targets. While these items may have unique character or variations, they all meet our high-performance and durability standards. Because this inventory is limited and already produced, please note: All items are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We cannot provide samples, color-matched add-ons, or matching trim. We recommend ordering 20% overage to ensure you have enough material to complete your project.
Can I mix different colors and sizes in my project?
Our tile is not necessarily modular from one size to another. Many shapes and sizes can be used together, but we recommend asking us first or ordering samples if you are working on a pattern. *Please note our Original Ceramic and Natural Press Tiles cannot be combined within one installation due to different manufacturing processes.
Can Original Ceramic Tile be used for pools, spas or fountains?
No, but our Natural Press Ceramic Tile and Glass Tile product lines are both suitable for pools, spas, and fountains.
Does Fireclay offer slip-resistant Original Ceramic Tile colors?
Our matte finish tile options are the best option for floors as all matte glazes are slip-resistant. Explore matte options on our shop colors page. With a DCOF value above .42, all of our Original Ceramic Tiles with matte glazes are rated for wet areas where slip resistance may be required.
How thick is Original Ceramic tile?
Our tile is approximately 5⁄16″ thick.
Is Fireclay Tile compatible with radiant or in-floor heating?
Yes, Fireclay Tile is compatible with radiant/in-floor heating. All our floor tiles work well with electric radiant heat systems due to the excellent conductivity of ceramic. For added protection against in-plane movement, consider using a system with a built-in uncoupling membrane. Hydronic radiant heat systems, which use warm water-filled plastic tubes, are also compatible with our tiles. Always check with the radiant heat manufacturer for compatibility. For more details, please discuss with your Fireclay Tile representative.
Is Original Ceramic Tile frost proof or resistant?
Original Ceramic tile is no longer recommended for outdoor use in most environments due to the detrimental effects of climate change. If you’d like to use ceramic tile in an outdoor or exterior application, our Natural Press Ceramic Tile passes freeze-thaw testing and is suitable for all climates.
Is Original Ceramic available in all colors and shapes?
Due to the uniqueness of each order, we do not stock any of our colors or sizes, other than the tile that is found in our Quick Ship Collection. All other products are made to order, and lead times are quoted at the time of purchase.
What is Original Ceramic tile made of?
Our ceramic tile is stoneware tile, which differs from porcelain in the coarseness of the clay, the lower firing temperature and overall porosity. However, our clay bodies are very unique for stoneware and very durable. In many cases our tile can easily take the place of porcelain.
What is the DCOF rating, and why is it important for floor applications?
DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) measures a tile’s slip resistance when wet. A higher DCOF rating indicates better traction, making it a critical consideration for floor applications, especially in commercial or wet environments. All of our matte tiles meet DCOF standards for slip resistance and are suitable for residential and commercial flooring applications. Consult our product specifications for specific DCOF values.
What is variation?
Due to the handcrafted nature of our Original Ceramic tile, variations in color, texture, crazing, and finish will occur in different degrees depending on the specific glaze. Individual color variation is graded V1 (least) to V4 (most). See our Color Guide for a full list of glazes, variations, and finishes. Finishes are not interchangeable.
Why is it suggested that I purchase 15% over the amount required for my installation?
Ordering an extra 15% is a general rule of thumb when ordering tile. It’s meant to cover loss of material during cutting and possible job site jostling. Most often when a unique, handmade tile cut has been made, the remaining piece of tile cannot be used anywhere else, resulting in fewer tiles than expected. Placing smaller refill orders after the initial order can be costly and time consuming, and due to the inherent batch variation with Fireclay Tile, a second run could end up looking different from the original order.
Why is my tile showing crazing that wasn't there before?
Certain tiles may craze over time, meaning small surface cracks may develop over the course of your tile’s lifetime. Crazing is part of the inherent beauty of our tiles. We rate our glazes based on their level of crazing. Our scale goes from low to heavy, low being a slight crackle finish, heavy being the most crackled.
Are there special considerations for grout when installing ceramic tile?
"Grout is crucial for ceramic tile installations. It must be properly mixed, applied, and sealed to prevent moisture infiltration and maintain the integrity of the installation. *Note: Our tiles feature natural glaze crazing, and installing with a contrasting grout color is not recommended. Dark grouts with pigments can stain the tile and should be pre-tested for staining. Additionally, using a contrasting grout will highlight any imperfections in the installation, so this should be carefully considered."
Can I install ceramic tile myself, or should I hire a professional?
DIY installation is possible, but it’s essential to have the right tools and follow proper installation techniques. When in doubt, hiring a professional installer is recommended.
Can ceramic tile be used in wet areas, like bathrooms and pools?
Yes, ceramic tile is an excellent choice for wet areas. Its water resistance makes it ideal for bathroom floors, shower walls, and indoor or outdoor pools.
Can ceramic tile be used outdoors?
Yes! Natural Press ceramic tiles are designed for outdoor use, including pool applications, patios, fireplace facades, and fountains.
Can ceramic tile be used over existing flooring?
In some cases, ceramic tile can be installed over existing flooring, but it depends on the condition of the existing surface and the type of tile. Consult with a professional for guidance on your specific project.
Can we Mix and Match Tiles Together?
Yes, various sizes and shapes can be used together in installations, as seen with great examples on our Mosaics page. However, please note that tiles between the two ceramic lines, Original Ceramic Tile and Natural Press Ceramic Tile, cannot be blended in one surface area installation due to different manufacturing processes. For more information on how to blend tile, please contact us through our Design Assistance form. *Note: Tile is natural pressed and single fired in line, and tile size variance from 1⁄16" to 1⁄8" can be expected. If designing a specific pattern, contact us. Our tile sizes are not modular.
How do I clean and maintain ceramic tile?
Ceramic tile is easy to clean with regular sweeping and damp mopping. Use a pH-balanced cleaner to maintain its appearance. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the glaze.
Is ceramic tile suitable for high traffic areas?
Yes, the slip-resistant Matte finish on our Natural Press Ceramic Tile is a durable choice for high-traffic areas and is DCOF-rated. It’s resistant to wear and can withstand heavy foot traffic in both residential and commercial projects.
What are the advantages of using Ceramic Tile?
Ceramic tile is known for its durability, water resistance, ease of maintenance, and wide range of design options. Our Natural Press Ceramic Tile is suitable for various applications, including showers, backsplashes, walls, floors, fireplaces, and exteriors including pools.
What is the most popular color of ceramic tile?
The popularity of ceramic tile colors can vary by region and design trends. Classic neutrals like white and beige are often popular due to their timeless appeal. Explore all colors, and filter by colors on our Natural Press colors page.
What's the difference between Natural Press and Original Ceramic?
Natural Press is made from pressed clay in our Spokane, WA factory. It’s a volume and budget-friendly line, featuring an exclusive palette of 32 colors as well as 15 versatile sizes, including mosaics. Our heritage Original Ceramic product line is made from extruded clay in Aromas, CA. It features 50 thoughtfully curated colors available in matte and gloss finishes, artisan Studio Glazes, Ceramic Stains, and over 35 shapes and sizes including specialty shapes like Star & Cross, Scalene Triangle, and more.
Do you offer slip-resistant glass tile?
Yes. For projects requiring extra traction, we offer a Slip-Resistant (Corundum) finish. This specialized finish involves fusing a fine mineral abrasive (corundum) to the surface of the glass, significantly increasing the tile's DCOF rating. It is ideal for high-traffic commercial floors, residential entryways, or wet areas where safety is a primary concern. Note: The Corundum finish may slightly soften the color's vibrance compared to our standard Gloss finish.
Is Fireclay Glass Tile Suitable for wet areas and pools?
Absolutely. Our Glass Tile is classified as impervious, meaning it has a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%. This makes it the gold standard for submerged applications like pools, spas, and fountains, as well as high-moisture areas like steam showers. Its non-porous surface also makes it naturally resistant to mold, mildew, and staining.
What finishes and colors are available for Glass Tile?
Our Glass collection features 24 curated colors, each available in two distinct finishes: Gloss: A polished, reflective surface that enhances color depth and light. Matte: A smooth, etched surface that provides a soft, non-reflective look. All 24 colors are available across our standard glass sizes, allowing you to mix and match finishes for added texture and visual interest in your design.
What is Fireclay Glass Tile made of?
Our glass tile is made from premium raw glass sand and minerals, meticulously crafted in our Spokane, Washington, factory. Unlike many mass-produced options, our glass is 100% recyclable and engineered for superior durability and pigment depth. By manufacturing locally in the USA, we maintain a smaller carbon footprint while ensuring every tile meets rigorous standards for color consistency and strength. Each tile is impervious to water and frostproof, making it an ideal choice for both interior walls and exterior applications, including pools. By using a specialized cold-processing method and local USA manufacturing, we ensure a sustainable product with a smaller carbon footprint and a uniform V1 color rating (the most consistent color grade we offer).
What sizes and shapes does Fireclay Glass Tile come in?
Our Glass collection is available in 12 standard sizes, ranging from large-format field tile to intricate, hand-sheeted mosaics. Field Tile Sizes Ideal for backsplashes and walls, these are sold by the square foot: Classic Shapes: 2x6, 3x6, 3x12, and 4x 12. Modern Squares: 4x4 and 6x 6. Mosaic Sizes Our mosaics are face-taped for easy installation and precise alignment: Small Formats: 1x1, 2x2, and 1x 2. Specialty Shapes: 1x4 and 2x4.
Where can Glass Tile be installed?
Fireclay Glass is a high-performance material rated for both interior and exterior use. Because it is impervious to water and frostproof, it excels in demanding environments. Wet Areas: Perfect for shower walls, steam showers, and kitchen backsplashes. Pools & Spas: Fully rated for submerged applications and water lines. Walls & Surrounds: Ideal for accent walls and fireplace surrounds (decorative exterior only). Floors: While standard Gloss and Matte finishes are not recommended for floors due to scratching, our Slip-Resistant (Corundum) finish is specifically engineered for residential and light commercial flooring.
Does Glazed Thin Brick require grout?
Yes. We recommend a 3⁄8″ grout joint for our Glazed Thin Brick, which is the industry standard and allows for optimal aesthetic appeal and ease of installation with the natural variations of the material. For tighter joints (1/4″ or 3⁄16″), additional overage may be required, and we advise contacting your design consultant.
Is Glazed Thin Brick in stock?
We offer select bestselling Brick colors in our Quick Ship Shop, which are in stock and ship in 5 days or less. All other Brick products are made to order, and lead times are quoted at the time of purchase.
Is your Glazed Thin Brick frost proof or resistant?
Yes, our Glazed Thin Brick is suitable for outdoor installations in all climates.
What is Glazed Thin Brick?
Glazed Thin Brick, also known as brick slips or brick look tile, is a genuine thin brick product, approximately 1⁄2″ thick. Unlike traditional full-size brick, its reduced thickness and weight allow for easier installation methods, similar to conventional ceramic tile, making it ideal for a wider range of surfaces without significant structural modification. Our Brick is made in California and hand-glazed in our Aromas, CA factory.
What sizes do you offer?
Our Glazed Thin Brick is available in two versatile sizes: our standard size is 2.5×8, and our elongated Norman size is 2.5×11.5. Corners and glazed edges are also available.
Where can I use Glazed Thin Brick?
Our Glazed Thin Brick is suitable for commercial, hospitality and residential settings, and can accommodate projects over 100,000 square feet. It can be used for both interiors and exteriors. Glazed Thin Brick is suitable for walls, counters, residential floors, and fireplace surrounds. However, it should not be installed inside the firebox of a fireplace. For wet areas, it is suitable for shower walls and exterior applications, but not for steam showers, shower pans, or pools due to the porous nature of the brick body.
Why are there lines or a rough texture on the surface of my thin brick?
These markings are a natural characteristic of the "wire-cut" manufacturing process. To create our thin brick profile, a column of clay is extruded and then sliced into 1/2" thick units using high-tension wires. These wires leave behind linear textures and markings that highlight the authentic, industrial origins of the brick. These variations are a standard part of the product's aesthetic and are not considered defects.
Why does my brick have slight curves or look "warped"?
This is a natural effect of the high-temperature firing process. Because brick is made from earthborne materials, units can develop a slight "bow" or curve as they dry and harden in the kiln. These minor distortions are a standard characteristic of authentic clay brick. To best accommodate these natural variations, we recommend using a 3/16" grout joint (or larger) to help level out the finished look of your installation.
Why is it suggested that I purchase 15% over the amount required for my installation?
15% is a general rule of thumb when ordering tile. It’s meant to cover loss of material during cutting and possible job site jostling. Most often when a unique, handmade tile cut has been made, the remaining piece of tile cannot be used anywhere else, resulting in fewer tiles than expected. Placing smaller refill orders after the initial order can be costly and time consuming, and due to the inherent batch variation with our tile, a second run could end up looking different from the original order.
Why should I inspect my brick before installing?
Due to the handmade nature of our Glazed Thin Brick, a slight variation in color and texture exists, giving each piece distinctive beauty. All material should be inspected prior to installation. We recommend pulling from all boxes during installation in order to minimize any dye lot differentials throughout your project. Do not install tile with hairline cracks or chips.
Can I choose custom colorways for Handpainted Tile?
Absolutely! We want our patterns to fit your specific vision perfectly. You can customize any of our Handpainted designs using our library of over 100+ glaze colors.
Two Ways to Customize:
DIY with our Digital Tool: Visit any Handpainted product page and click "Customize This Pattern." Our interactive tool allows you to swap colors in real-time to see how your palette looks before you buy.
Work with a Designer: Our Design Consultants are experts at color theory. They can help you pull a custom "motif" that coordinates perfectly with your cabinetry, stone, or wall colors.
What to Know:
Fees: A one-time Custom Color Development Fee may apply if you choose glazes outside of the pattern's standard offering.
Samples: We highly recommend ordering a Custom Strike-off (a physical sample of your custom design) before placing your full order.
Lead Times: Custom colorways typically add 1–2 weeks to our standard Handpainted lead time.
Can I use my own design?
Yes! We love bringing unique visions to life. Whether you want to customize the colors of an existing Fireclay pattern or develop an entirely original design, our team is here to help.
1. Customizing Our Existing Patterns You can swap any of our current glaze colors into our existing Handpainted patterns.
The Process: Use our [Handpainted Tile Tool] to visualize your colors.
The Fee: There is a Custom Color Development Fee for each non-standard glaze used.
2. Creating an Original Design If you have an original pattern, we can develop a custom silk-screen for your project.
The Development Fee: Starts at $250. This covers the digital translation of your art, custom screen creation, and two physical sample pieces for your approval.
The Fine Print: Because we use the Cuerda Seca (wax resist) method, designs with extremely fine lines or photographic gradients may need to be simplified.
Refund Policy: Due to the labor-intensive nature of custom development, fees for screens and color matching are non-refundable once the process begins.
Pro Tip: Custom designs usually require a minimum square footage. Connect with a Design Consultant to see if your project is a fit for a fully custom screen.
How do I order a sample?
Handpainted Samples Because our Handpainted tiles are intricate, full-scale works of art, they are priced per piece. How to order: Navigate to your favorite Handpainted pattern. Scroll down to the "Get a Sample" section and select your preferred color motif. Note: These samples come in our pre-curated "colorways." If you need a custom color-way sample, please Contact a Designer to discuss a custom strike-off.
How is Handpainted Tile priced?
Our Handpainted collections are priced per piece (rather than by the square foot) to reflect the individual craftsmanship of every tile. We use a three-tier system based on the complexity of the design and the number of hand-applied glazes required.
What are the average lead times?
Because we handcrafted our tile to order in our California and Washington factories, lead times vary based on the complexity of your project. Here are our standard estimates: Quick Ship: Ships in 5 business days or less. This includes our most popular colors and sizes in Ceramic, Glass, and Brick. Made-to-Order Field Tile: Typically 4–6 weeks. This allows our artisans time to hand-glaze and fire your specific batch. Handpainted & Custom Tile: Typically 6–8+ weeks. These intricate patterns require multiple firings and hand-application of glazes. Pro Tip: Your lead time begins once your order is paid in full and any necessary architectural drawings are approved. For the most accurate "today" estimate, check the live lead time banner on our website or [chat with us].
Where and how are hand-painted tiles made?
Every piece of our Handpainted Tile is a unique work of art, handcrafted to order in our Aromas, California, factory. We use a traditional Spanish technique called Cuerda Seca (Dry Cord) to bring our patterns to life: The Base: We start with "bisque"—clay tile that has been fired once to create a durable foundation. The Pattern: A black wax resist is screen-printed onto the bisque. This creates "walls" that prevent different glaze colors from mixing. The Artistry: Our artisans hand-apply the glazes into each section of the pattern using specialized bulb syringes—think of it like highly technical "coloring in the lines." The Final Fire: The tiles are fired a second time. The wax resist burns away, leaving a signature dark, recessed outline between the vibrant glazes. A Note on Color: Because these glazes are hand-applied, slight variations in depth and tone are natural. While we aim for a close match, we cannot guarantee an exact 1:1 match between Handpainted glazes and our standard Field Tile colors.
Where can I use Handpainted Tile?
Our Handpainted collections are designed to be the focal point of a space. While highly versatile, their best use depends on the specific clay body and glaze finish: Vertical Surfaces: Ideal for kitchen backsplashes, shower walls, fireplace surrounds, and stair risers. Flooring: Suitable for residential floors and light-traffic commercial spaces. For safety and longevity, we recommend selecting slip-resistant matte glazes for any floor application. Wet Areas: Perfectly safe for showers and backsplashes. However, they are not recommended for submerged use (pools or fountains). Exterior: Most Handpainted tiles are for interior use only. If you are planning an outdoor project, please consult with your design assistant to ensure the clay body is rated for your climate’s freeze-thaw cycles.
Are mosaic tiles hard to clean?
The tile itself is easy to clean, but more grout means more surface area for potential staining. To keep your mosaics looking new: Seal your grout upon installation and annually thereafter. Use a pH-neutral cleaner to avoid eroding the grout or damaging glass finishes.
Are mosaic tiles hard to install?
Thanks to modern sheeting techniques, mosaic tiles are much easier to install than in the past. In fact, since mosaic sheets are approximately 1 square foot each, mosaics can be much easier to install than loose field tile. Unlike mesh-backed tiles, most Fireclay mosaics are face-taped. A clear plastic film is applied to the front of the tile. This ensures 100% of the tile back bonds to the thin-set—essential for wet areas and pools. Do not remove the tape until the tile is set in the mortar.
Can I create a custom mosaic design?
Absolutely. We specialize in bringing your unique vision to life through our custom mosaic capabilities. Whether you are looking for a bespoke color blend or a completely original pattern, our team works closely with you to tailor our ceramic and glass offerings to your project’s exact specifications.
Can mosaic tile be used on floors?
Yes! Mosaics are the gold standard for floor safety. The high ratio of grout-to-tile creates natural traction. For Showers: We highly recommend mosaics for shower pans to prevent slipping. For Commercial Floors: All of our matte ceramic glazes are DCOF rated (>0.42), making them safe for high-traffic areas.
Do mosaic tiles need grout?
Yes. Our standard mosaic template has a 3⁄16″ grout spacing. *Essentials 3×3 Tile uses a ⅛” grout spacing.
Do you offer custom mosaic murals?
Absolutely. We offer three levels of customization: Pre-Designed Patterns: Checkerboard, Daisy, Sparkle, and Escher. Custom Blends: Create your own "pixelated" color mix using our Mosaic Tool. Murals: Our artisans can translate digital files or artwork into hand-sheeted mosaic murals.
Do you offer slip-resistant finishes on mosaic sizes?
Yes! All of our matte ceramic glazes are available in mosaic sizes and feature a DCOF rating above .42.
How is my project measured?
All mosaic tile orders are measured by the square feet except for mosaic borders, which are measured by linear feet. Sheeting templates measure approximately 1 square foot and vary depending on the specific tile size and pattern factoring in a 3⁄16″ grout spacing.
What are mosaic borders?
Mosaic borders are the essential finishing touch for a memorable floor installation. We offer four distinct styles—Channel Stripe, Labyrinth, Tailored Stripe, and Ribbon—that can be paired with our mosaic patterns or field tile to create a framed, custom-level statement in your project. These are sold by the linear foot.
What is a mosaic tile?
Mosaics are small-format tiles (typically 3" or smaller) pre-mounted onto sheets for easy installation. Because they have more grout lines, they offer superior slip resistance and can "wrap" around curved surfaces like shower pans, columns, or pool steps.
What materials & sizes are mosaic tiles available in?
What materials and sizes do you offer? We handcraft mosaics in both Ceramic and Glass: Ceramic Sizes: 1x1, 2x2, 1x4, 1x6, 2x4, 3x3, Hexagons (1", 2", 3"), 3" Triangle, Penny Rounds, and Small Diamonds. Glass Sizes: 1x1, 2x2, 1x4, 1x6, 2x4, and 3x3.
What types of mosaic tile patterns are available?
We offer four iconic, ready-to-order patterns: Checkerboard, Daisy, Sparkle, and Escher. These classic layouts are available in curated colorways and a slip-resistant matte finish, allowing you to achieve an artisanal look with the ease of a pre-sheeted system.
Are these tiles easy to install?
Yes. Our mosaic sizes (1×1, 2×2, and 3×3) are pre-sheeted in our California factory, which ensures aligned patterns and a seamless installation. Our 12×12 tiles offer a traditional installation experience for large-scale surfaces.
Can I order samples of the checkerboard pairings?
Absolutely, we encourage it. Seeing the colors in your project’s specific lighting is essential. You can order samples directly on the checkerboard page or product listing, and you will receive a 2×4 color sample of each color.
Can I use checkerboard tile for bathroom floors?
Absolutely. This collection was designed with high-traffic and wet areas in mind. All tiles in our Checkerboard collection feature a slip-resistant matte finish that meets DCOF standards, making them a safe and sophisticated choice for residential and commercial bathroom floors, kitchen floors, entryways, mudrooms and more.
Is checkerboard tile suitable for outdoor use?
Our Natural Press Ceramic product line is freeze-proof and highly durable, so our 12×12 checkerboard tiles are an excellent choice for indoor and outdoor installations in any climate. Our Original Ceramic product line, including the 1×1, 2×2 and 3×3 checkerboard tiles, is recommended for interior use only.
What exactly will I receive when I order checkerboard tile?
When you order checkerboard tiles you will receive square tiles in the size and colors of your choice, and you will receive an equal amount of each color. So for example, if you order 20 SqFt of 12×12 Manzanita and Salt Creek Matte, you will receive 10 SqFt of 12×12 Manzanita and 10 SqFt of Salt Creek. Please note, our mosaic checkerboard tiles (1×1, 2×2 and 3×3) will arrive sheeted.
What is the difference between Original Ceramic and Natural Press?
While both are handcrafted in the USA, they utilize different manufacturing techniques: Original Ceramic (Aromas, CA): These tiles are made from extruded clay in a more labor-intensive manufacturing process, offering a more organic feel with slightly more color variation. Natural Press (Spokane, WA): Natural Press tiles are made from clay that’s milled into powder and pressed into molds, resulting in a more uniform look and a more accessible price point.
What makes Fireclay's Checkerboard tiles unique?
Our Checkerboard collection is a curated approach to a timeless motif. We’ve taken the guesswork out of the design process by pairing bestselling hand-mixed colors in four versatile sizes. Whether you choose our large-format 12×12 Natural Press tiles or our sheeted Original Ceramic mosaics, each piece is handcrafted in our American factories with a focus on enduring quality and slip-resistant performance.
What sizes are available for Checkerboard patterns?
We offer four distinct sizes to suit the scale of any project: 12×12: A classic large-format tile from our Natural Press line, ideal for expansive floor installations. 3×3, 2×2, and 1×1: These sizes are part of our Original Ceramic line and come pre-sheeted as mosaics for a seamless installation.

Yes, our Uncoated Polished Brass, French Nickel and French Brass are all living finishes. These finishes are designed to patina and evolve over time, adding a unique and dynamic character to your fixtures.
How can I ensure consistent finish matching for all my fixtures?
We recommend that all products for the same space be ordered simultaneously to ensure a perfect match. This allows us to process them together during our finishing process, and minimizes color variation. Please note that due to the handmade nature of our finishing, minor variations can occur. Additionally, some finishes are shipped with a protective wax, which may slightly alter the appearance of the finish. To enhance uniformity, we suggest applying our Faucet Wax Plus with a soft microfiber cloth. Please note that certain items may patina or fade at different rates based on usage and water exposure. Regular application of Faucet Wax Plus can help maintain the finish’s integrity over time.
How can I optimize the performance of my shower head over time?
To maintain optimal performance and prevent mineral buildup, we recommend periodically soaking your shower head in a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. This process effectively breaks down mineral deposits and sediment, ensuring consistent water flow and extending the life of your shower head.
How do I choose the right showerhead for low water pressure?
All Fireclay shower heads are designed to optimize water pressure while adhering to code-required flow restrictors. Each of our shower heads features a 1.75 GPM flow restrictor, ensuring a consistent and satisfying shower experience, even in homes with lower water pressure. You can select any of our shower head styles with confidence, knowing they are engineered for optimal performance.

What kind of cleaners can I use on my Fireclay products?
To protect the finish of your Fireclay faucets and showers, avoid cleaners containing abrasives, harsh chemicals, alcohol, or other organic solvents as well as cleaners or pads and sponges that are unsafe for polished metallic surfaces. Green, fibrous pads or sponges often contain microscopic mineral particles that can scratch your finish. Due to potential formula changes by manufacturers, we do not endorse any specific cleaners. After cleaning your faucet, rinse thoroughly with water. For water spots, use warm water and a soft, damp cloth. Hard water stains can be removed with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water, followed by rinsing. To maintain the luster of your finish, occasionally apply a high-quality non-abrasive wax such as Flitz Faucet Wax.
What valve types are used in Fireclay's shower systems?
We utilize premium pressure-balancing and thermostatic mixing valves in our shower systems, ensuring consistent temperature and flow control. Specific valve types are listed in the product specifications.
When will the valve rough-ins ship in relation to the trim?
Valves ship separately and in advance of trim to allow for timely in-wall installation during the rough plumbing phase, typically within 2-3 days of order.

Absolutely! You can customize your tile selections and incorporate surrounding design elements such as cabinetry, countertops, lighting, and hardware to suit your style and needs. Our Design Packages focus exclusively on showcasing Fireclay’s tile and bath products.

Our Design Packages are focused on visualizing your tile selections within your space, or tile and bath selections within your bathroom. Does Fireclay Tile provide project takeoffs?
Yes, we offer professional takeoffs as an integrated part of our Design Packages. To ensure the highest level of accuracy, takeoffs are performed only once a project reaches its final stage. To request a takeoff, we require: A final design rendering (takeoffs are provided for one final approved option). A complete floor plan and/or elevations of your space. Please Note: We provide an exact square footage (SF) and linear footage (LF) breakdown rounded to the nearest whole number. Because these figures represent net measurements, overage is not included in the breakdown. You or your installer must add the industry-standard 10–15% overage to the final order to account for cuts and waste. We strongly recommend verifying all final takeoffs with your professional installer for added accuracy before placing your order.
How are the free tile samples provided?
Tile color samples are shipped directly to your address so you can see and feel the quality and color accuracy of our tiles.
How do I provide feedback on the designs I receive?

My client is using competitor tile or bath products and wants to include it in their rendering. Is this something we can do?
Unfortunately, no. We do not offer the option to include competitor tiles or bath products in our renderings. In this case, you have two options. You can either omit it from your request and use a standard material in its place or you can find a Fireclay Tile equivalent to be used. If you decide to use a FCT equivalent, please let the team know that it is just a placeholder and not to include it on our specification callouts.
What happens during a virtual design consultation?
During the consultation, your Design Consultant will discuss your vision, review your materials, and refine the design plan. It’s an interactive session to ensure all your needs are met.
What if I need more than one round of revisions?
Each Design Package includes a minimum of two 3D rendered views of your space, three design options, and one round of revisions. Additional revisions or design options can be purchased as needed. Please contact your Design Consultant for pricing and details.

What should I do if I have a tight deadline?
Inform your Design Consultant during the initial consultation so we can prioritize your project and explore expedited options for design and delivery.
What should a client bring to their initial consultation?
To make the most of your consultation, we recommend bringing materials that help us understand your space and design vision, such as floor plans, elevations or photos, along with inspiration images and any preferred glaze colors, tile finishes, or shapes. It’s also helpful to share details on other design elements like wallpaper, vanities, paint colors, countertops, lighting, or hardware finishes, as well as your project timeline and budget, if available.
Who makes up the dedicated team assigned to my project?
Your team includes a Design Consultant who leads the project, a Design Artist who creates your 3D visualizations, and a Project Manager who ensures the project stays on schedule.
Will my rendering accurately reflect all products in the space?
We can only speak to the rendering quality, texture, and finish of Fireclay Tile and Bath products. Although we’ll try our best to match your specifications, all other product offerings included in the renderings are subject to interpretation. Please see our Design Packages pages for examples.
Are Fireclay’s custom products created sustainably?
Yes, sustainability is in our DNA and is a non-negotiable part of our custom work. As a certified B Corp, we are committed to mindful manufacturing, and our custom products uphold this standard: Mindful Materials: We utilize lead-free glazes and continually invest in innovative, sustainable practices. American-Made: Our custom products are crafted in our US facilities, ensuring compliance with among the strongest environmental regulations in the world and allowing for unmatched transparency. Climate Neutral: We are a Climate Label Certified company, offsetting 100% of our carbon footprint from our entire operation, including production and shipping.
Can I provide my own design or artwork for a Custom Mosaic Mural?
Yes, we welcome your unique vision. You can provide your own artwork, photograph, or design concept. For a seamless process, we require: The exact dimensions of your project space. Your preferred tile size and glaze colors to be used (we can help you with this!). The actual artwork, which we then translate into a mosaic map showing piece counts and exact color placement.
Can custom tile be used for outdoor, commercial or wet area applications?
Yes, our Glass Tile and Natural Press Tile pass freeze-thaw testing and are suitable for interior and exterior projects, including pools. Glazed Thin Brick, although not suitable for pools, also passes freeze-thaw testing; it is suitable for exterior applications and is a popular choice for commercial projects. Glass Tile is also 100% impervious, making it an ideal choice for pools, fountains, and other wet areas
Can you color-match our specific brand, paint or material sample?
Absolutely – that’s what our Glaze Development process is built for! We require a control sample (a physical item, a Pantone color, or another reference material) to be sent to our lab for matching. Our team of experts then utilizes sustainable practices, lead-free glazes, and innovative technology to achieve the closest possible match. Note: While we always strive for perfection, the unique alchemy of fire, clay, and glaze means a 100% exact match may not always be feasible. We focus on finding the closest, most beautiful interpretation of your vision.
How does Fireclay ensure the quality of a custom tile order?
Quality is our foundation. We ensure the integrity of your custom order through a highly intentional process: Artisan Craftsmanship: Every piece of custom tile is handcrafted by our expert artisans in our US factories, where we maintain the utmost attention to detail. Rigorous Development: For custom glazes, our lab uses multiple test formulas (up to three initial formulas) to achieve the closest match, using pour tests on our actual clay body and firing them in our kilns for true-to-life results. Transparent Approval: Before full production, all custom designs and colors – whether they are physical glaze samples or digital handpainted/mosaic artwork – require your final sign-off. This ensures the final product aligns perfectly with your vision.
How long does a custom tile project take?
Custom tile development has two distinct phases: 1. Design & Sample Development: This phase, which begins once any initial development fee is paid, typically takes 2 – 4 weeks. Custom Glaze Color: Expect a general timeline of 2 – 3 weeks for our Aromas, CA facility and 3 – 4 weeks for Spokane, WA. Custom Handpainted Pattern Sample: After digital artwork approval (1 – 3 business days), a physical sample takes an additional 2 – 3 weeks to craft. Custom Mosaic Maps: The initial digital map for project planning can be delivered in 2 – 5 business days. 2. Production: The manufacturing lead time for your full order will be quoted once the design and samples are finalized and approved, and will depend on the product type and quantity.
Is there a development fee for a custom color or Handpainted pattern?
Yes, because custom projects require dedicated time, expert resources, and innovation, they are considered a premium service and incur two types of charges: Upfront Development Fee: This fee is paid before any custom development work begins. Custom Glaze Development: The initial fee is $750. This includes up to three color matches, one round of revisions, and a final round of submittals. Custom Handpainted Screen: The fee is $500 per screen. This covers custom artwork, tooling costs, and two physical samples. Custom Mosaic Maps: The fee is typically between $150 and $2,000, covering the added labor to create the detailed map and piece counts. Product Price: This is the price of the final approved custom product. In certain scenarios, such as large-scale projects, multi-phased rollouts, or when bundled with a significant order of standard products, the upfront development fee may be waived. Please connect with us to discuss your project specifics.
What are the minimum order requirements for a custom tile project?
The minimum requirements vary based on the level of customization needed for your project: Custom Glaze Color: For custom color development on our Original Ceramic, Natural Press Ceramic, Glazed Thin Brick, or Glass Tile, a 500 square foot minimum per color applies to the final order. Custom Shape: We can create unique tile shapes in our Aromas, CA factory. Custom shape orders have a 1,000 SqFt minimum per shape. Custom Handpainted: For a non-standard color motif (custom colorway) using our existing glazes, there is no minimum quantity. For a custom screen (new pattern, or enlarging/shrinking an existing pattern), the minimum is 100 pieces per custom screen Custom Mosaic Tile: There are no minimum order requirements to start. Note that small batch fees apply for glaze quantities under 25 square feet.
What is the process for reviewing and approving custom design samples?
Our process is designed to be a seamless collaboration that secures your confidence before moving into full production: Initial Development Samples: Our lab sends you the first round of physical samples (e.g., three different glaze formulas on cut 2×2 tiles). Review and Revision: You review the initial samples and provide feedback. Our development fee includes one round of revisions to fine-tune the color or pattern. If further development is required beyond this limit, an additional fee may apply. Final Submittals: Once approved, we create and send larger submittal samples (up to 1 SF per color) on the final tile size you need for your project, which typically takes 1 – 3 weeks. Final Sign-off: Your formal approval of the submittal sample locks in the design and triggers the full production phase.
Which tile materials are best suited for custom colors or designs?
Customization is possible across all of our tile product lines, with dedicated processes for each: Custom Glaze Colors: We can develop custom glazes for our Ceramic Tile lines (Original Ceramic and Natural Press) Glass and Glazed Thin Brick. This includes applying existing glazes on alternate materials, such as Ceramic glazes on Brick or Original Ceramic on Natural Press. Custom Mosaic Design & Murals: These can be created using our Ceramic, Natural Press, or Glass Tile colors and shapes. Custom Handpainted Patterns: These designs are executed on our Original Ceramic Tile body.
Are there fees for custom development?
Custom projects involve specialized development and setup charges: Custom Color Development Fee: $750 (applies to any product family). This includes up to two rounds of color development and a 1 square foot submittal sample. A 500 SF minimum order is required for custom color projects. Up to 3 colors/finishes are included with this fee, additional colors/finishes can be added a la carte Custom Mosaic Map: $150 – $2,000. This fee covers the specialized labor required to create a custom mosaic map with precise piece counts based on your dimensions, including revisions. (Exceptions apply for semi-custom patterns like checkerboard or random blend.) Custom Handpainted Pattern Fee: $500. This covers custom screen development and two sample tiles. Additional custom color fees apply if new colors are part of the handpainted design. These fees cover the dedicated time and resources invested in bringing your unique design to fruition.
Can Fireclay Tile match an exact custom color?
While we strive for the closest possible interpretation of your custom color, due to the inherent nuances of handcrafted tile, glaze chemistry, and kiln firing, we cannot guarantee an exact color match. We will provide samples for your approval and work diligently to achieve the desired aesthetic, prioritizing the integrity and beauty of the finished product.
Can Fireclay create something custom for my project?
Absolutely. We specialize in bringing unique design visions to life. Our custom services include custom color development across all products, and custom size, shape, and unique glaze development for our Ceramic and Glass materials. We also excel in custom mosaic murals, from residential projects to large-scale commercial murals. Custom Handpainted patterns and colors are also available. While we strive to accommodate complex requests, our focus is on ensuring the highest quality outcome within our artisanal production capabilities.
How does a custom tile order work?
Our custom process is a collaborative journey, ensuring your vision comes to life with precision. It typically involves: Initial Consultation: Discussing your design concept, desired specifications, and project scope. Development & Sampling: Our artisans and engineers develop prototypes or color samples based on your requirements. Client Approval: Reviewing and approving the custom sample before full production begins. We provide complimentary storage for your order for 2 weeks after it’s complete if you are not yet ready to receive it. Are there extra fees for international shipments?
Orders shipped to countries outside of the United States are subject to pay all import taxes, customs, duties, and fees levied by your destination country. We will not be responsible for customs processing or freight forwarding for orders shipped internationally.
Can I split or consolidate my shipments?
Because we process so many shipments a month and each order is made to order, we are unable to split or consolidate shipments.
Do you ship internationally?
We have successfully made tile for projects all over the world including the UK, China, Australia, and beyond. We are happy to provide a shipping quote for international orders. Please call us at 800−773−2226 to discuss your project.
Do you ship to Alaska or Hawaii?
Yes, we ship to all 50 states. While sample and smaller orders to Alaska and Hawaii can be completed online, larger orders may require a custom shipping option. If you’re unable to complete your order online, simply contact your rep or connect with our team and we’ll be happy to help get your project shipped to you.
How will my order ship?
Orders are shipped via either package service (FedEx) or a freight carrier, depending on the total weight and the type of product ordered. For larger orders exceeding 50 square feet, delivery will be handled via curbside delivery. Shipping estimates are quoted at the time of your order and will not be modified after the order is placed unless material is added to or removed from the original order or a liftgate requirement is added or removed from the delivery instructions For large orders, we highly recommend requesting liftgate service to safely move your tile from the truck bed to the ground. If you request a liftgate after your order has already been placed, the fee is likely to be higher than at the time of purchase, and we will need to bill you for the additional charge before delivery. In addition to a liftgate, we suggest having several people on-site to assist you in moving the material. Please note that delivery drivers are not permitted to enter your home or garage; their responsibility ends at the curb. Bringing materials inside is considered "white-glove service," which incurs a significant extra cost determined by the shipping carrier. To ensure a successful delivery, we require the name and phone number of a designated on-site contact for every shipment, whether it is headed to a residence, business, or construction site. This information is imperative for order confirmation, as the shipping carrier must be able to reach someone directly to coordinate the delivery. The shipping carrier will reach out to your on-site contact to schedule a delivery appointment. Please be aware that these appointments are subject to the shipping carrier’s availability and the specific delivery driver’s daily schedule.
Is expedited shipping available?
For Expedited Shipping, we can inquire about the shipping company’s extra charges for expedited shipment and will charge you the difference. Please note we do not profit from expedited freight fees and only charge you what is charged by the shipping company. Please contact your Design Consultant, Commercial sales team member, or call 800−773−2226 for more information. We can provide a freight quote for Alaska, Hawaii, International, and Commercial orders once the order has been placed. Upon ordering, we will need a ship to address and onsite contact information (name and phone number). We cannot process your order until this information has been provided. Please note Fireclay Tile is not responsible for any redelivery fees incurred during the shipping process.
Is there a handling fee?
We do not charge handling fees on orders, except in the case of Commercial orders where a volume discount is applied. Orders with a volume discount that require pallets or crates will be charged a $20 Pallet or per Crate Fee.
Where is your tile shipped from?
Our tile orders are shipped from our Aromas, CA (95004) factory or our Spokane, WA (99212) factory.

Do you have a distributor or showroom in Canada?

Do you ship internationally?

Is your pricing in USD?

Are lead times guaranteed?
We do our best to honor quoted lead times for 30 days. There maybe circumstances due to order assortment that cause our lead times to fluctuate. Lead times are estimates based on the business day after an order has been placed and paid for. We will do everything we can to ensure your tile is made within our estimated lead time. However, we cannot fully guarantee lead times as events may occur that are outside of our control due to the custom nature of our tile. Delays may occur during the production process but we will do our very best to notify you should such a situation arise. Once your order ships, we will email your tracking information. While we make every effort to avoid delays in production, they do occasionally occur and are not considered grounds for cancellation. Please reach out to inquire about current lead times, as it may vary depending on the order and our current production queue.
Can I track my order during the production process?
Yes. Go to our Order Status page and simply enter your order number or FC to track the status of your order.
How long will it take to get my tile?
Your estimated lead time begins once your order is confirmed and paid in full. We will do everything we can to ensure your tile is made within our quoted lead time. However, we cannot fully guarantee lead times as events may occur that are outside of our control due to the custom nature of our tile. Our lead times are estimates only and do not represent fixed or guaranteed delivery dates. Fireclay Tile is not liable for damages, lost working time, or any expenses that relate directly or indirectly to variations in delivery dates. Any additions or changes to the order could delay the delivery date and may result in dye lot variation. Transit Time: Once production is complete, please allow additional time for freight delivery to your location. Delays & Changes: Any modifications to your order after it is placed will likely extend your lead time and may result in color variations.
Is expedited production available?
Expedited orders and shipping are often available for an additional fee. Please contact your Fireclay Design Consultant, email our Support Team, or call 800−773−2226 for more information.
How do I track my order?
To track your order, go to our Order Status page and simply enter your order number or FC to track the status of your order.
Do I need to seal my tile?
This is a great question, and we highly recommend talking with your installer, as generally where your tile is being installed (i.e. wet vs dry environment) has a large impact. Our recycled clay body colors do not need to be sealed in any environment. We suggest sealing for non-acid-resistant tile in an area such as a bathroom or pool to prevent a patina from forming on the tile. There is generally no benefit to sealing our glass tile. We suggest sealing for non-acid-resistant tile in an area such as a bathroom or pool to prevent a patina from forming on the tile. Contrasting grouts are not recommended by Fireclay Tile as they have the potential of staining your tiles if they are not properly sealed. If you must, we suggest sealing prior to grouting. It is always a good idea to seal your grout to ward off staining and discoloration from harsh cleaners and hard water.
How should I install my Fireclay Tile?
What do you recommend using to cut Fireclay Tile?
Use a diamond blade wet saw. Make sure that the cutting blade is in good condition. A finer blade will make a finer cut. For Glass Tile, rough edges may be smoothed with a sanding stone. Remember to always use safety goggles and gloves and make sure you keep the water clean for the most part while you use the saw.
What unique characteristics should I expect with handmade tile?
The beauty of handcrafted tile lies in its unique character. Although we work hard to ensure consistency as much as possible, you can expect slight differences in size, color, and glaze application from tile to tile and batch to batch. This includes warpage acceptance, crazing, and sheen variation. These natural nuances are inherent to the artisanal process and contribute to the authentic character and visual depth of your project. We strongly recommend a dry lay prior to installation to achieve your desired layout and color variation
Why should I inspect my tile before installation?
Due to the handmade nature of our tiles, varying degrees of color and texture variation, as well as slight size variation, will occur. This gives each piece distinctive beauty to each and every tile. All material should be inspected prior to installation. We recommend pulling from all boxes during installation in order to minimize any dye lot differentials throughout your project. Do not install tile with hairline cracks or chips.
Can colored or dark grout stain my tile?
When using heavily pigmented or dark grout colors, especially with lighter glazes, there is a high potential of staining or hazing. Generally, we do not recommend using dark grout with light-colored glazes. We always recommend performing a small test application on a spare tile or in an inconspicuous area, and consider using a grout release product before grouting. This helps ensure a pristine final result. Learn more about grout release here.
Do I need to seal my grout?
Yes, we strongly recommend sealing most cement-based grout lines after installation. Sealing protects the grout from stains and moisture penetration, ensuring the long-term beauty and cleanliness of your tiled surface. Always follow the grout sealer manufacturer’s instructions. Note that epoxy grout does not require sealing.
How does grout color impact the final look of my tile?
Grout color significantly influences the overall aesthetic of your tile installation. A matching grout color can create a seamless monochromatic appearance, allowing the tile’s texture and variation to be the primary focus. A contrasting grout color can highlight the individual tile shape and pattern, creating a more graphic and defined look. Consider sampling grout colors alongside your chosen tile to visualize the desired effect.
What grout joint size do you recommend?
For our handcrafted ceramic tiles, we generally recommend a grout joint of 3⁄16″. These sizes elegantly accommodate the subtle variations inherent in handmade products, allowing for a beautiful, even installation. For our Glazed Thin Brick, a 3⁄8″ grout joint is standard. For our Glass Tile, we recommend a grout joint of 1⁄16″. Handpainted Tile, which features a rectified edge, can have a grout joint of 1⁄8″. Learn more about choosing the right grout size here.
What type of grout should I use?
Selecting the correct grout type is crucial for both the aesthetic and longevity of your project. We generally recommend sanded grout for most applications with our Ceramic Tile, Handpainted Tile, and Glazed Thin Brick. Non-sanded Urethane grouts are recommended for our Glass Tile. Epoxy grout may also be considered for its superior stain resistance and durability. Always check with the grout manufacturer to ensure material compatibility.
For detailed guidelines specific to your tile, please refer to our comprehensive installation guides:
How do I properly care for and maintain my Fireclay Tile installation?
Routine cleaning with mild, pH-neutral cleaners and a soft cloth or sponge is recommended to preserve the beauty of your Fireclay installation. Avoid harsh abrasives, strong acids, or chemical cleaners. For specific care instructions based on your product and application, please refer to our Care & Maintenance Guide.

My tile arrived broken. What can be done?
When your order arrives, immediately inspect your tile to ensure it has not been damaged during transit. We make sure our tile leaves our docks in perfect condition. However, we do anticipate a few tiles may break during shipment (it’s why we almost always include some extras). If you notice a significant amount of breakage or clear issues with the packing, please take several photos of the damaged tile in detail as well as the boxes the order arrived in. Detailed photos and counts of what is broken will help us better serve you as we assess the damage to your order. Contact your Design Consultant or sales team member immediately so that we can file a claim with the shipping company, and we’ll try our best to replace any damaged tile as quickly as possible.
My product has been installed but I am unhappy. Can I return it?
You are responsible for determining the acceptability of the product prior to installation. Given the handcrafted nature of our products — from the subtle color, size, and thickness variation inherent in our tile to the texture and finishes of our bath fixtures — we are unable to offer a refund or provide a discount on a replacement order after installation. Installation is acceptance.
What if I think the tile color I ordered is wrong or the sizes are different from what I expected?
Because each tile is handcrafted and made-to-order, no two orders will be exactly the same. Hence there will always be elements of color and slight size variation that exist in each of our products, in every order. We do our absolute best to make every customer aware of this ahead of time so they are not surprised when they see variation in color and/or size. This is the nature of our product, and it is what has made Fireclay Tile unique since 1986.
In the event you believe the variation presented is out of line with that presented throughout our website, on our FAQs, or in our Installation and Specification sheets, please do contact us.
What if I order too much tile? Can I return the overage?
Each tile order is custom-made, thus we are unable to take back material after the order is completed. We highly recommend keeping it in a storage area in the event your tile breaks, needs to be replaced or you decide to tile a larger area.

What if I did not order enough tile?
We call these “add-ons” and they are a frustrating part of any tile project. They cause delays, mean added cost, and it is the main reason we strongly encourage customers to order 15% overage, or Attic Stock. In the event that you need additional tile, you will have 30 days to request an Add-On from the time you receive your original order. The challenge for us is that smaller Add-On orders are very costly to manufacture and require extra work to ensure the color is accurate. All Add-On orders will incur a $150 Set-Up Fee. In addition, Add-On orders will be charged full retail pricing. To begin your Add-On order, contact your Design Consultant or Commercial sales team member to determine how much more tile you will need. We will require a control sample of your original tile order to begin production. We are happy to send you a return shipping label for sample submission.
Please return the sample to the below address and reference your original order number, account name, and Fireclay Tile contact person:
Fireclay Tile Factory 521 Quarry Road Aromas, CA 95004 (800) 773‑2226 Due to the handcrafted nature of our tile, we are unable to guarantee that the color or sizing will be an exact match to your original order.
However, we will do everything we can to keep as close to the original as possible. Standard quoted lead times will apply to Add-On orders. If you need your Add-On order sooner than the quoted lead time, we may be able to accommodate depending on production availability. A +30% Rush Fee will be applied.
What if I do not like what I ordered?
In the event that you aren’t happy with your order, we can offer you up to 50% off a different item to replace it. Our philosophy is simple – if you are not happy with the product, we will work with you until you are.
