Tile School: LEED Overview

By Shannon Malone |

LEED the way! Along with volume pricing, easy sampling, and made to order product, our Commercial and Trade members are able to qualify for LEED credits when specifying our product.  All of Fireclay Tile’s product lines qualify for and may contribute to the various LEED Credits either due to our factory location in Northern California or our recycled content.  Below is an overview of each credit and how our tile applies.

Materials & Resources

Materials Resource MR Credit 4.1 and 4.2

Intent: To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials

Requirements: Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post consumer recycled content plus ½ of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% or 20%, based on cost of the total value of the materials in the project.

The minimum percentage materials recycled for each point threshold is as follows:

Recycled Content

10% - 1 point

20% - 2 points

The recycled content value of a material assembly is determined by weight.  The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content.

Product Contribution:

Recycled Tile: Fireclay’s recycled clay body Tile has 20% by weight pre-consumer recycled content and 55% by weight post-consumer content

Glass: Fireclay’s Recycled Glass tile has 99% pre-consumer recycled content by weight

Brick: Fireclay’s Glazed Thin Brick has 0% by weight pre-consumer recycled content and 100 % by weight post-consumer recycled content

Credit Calculations: Please refer to appropriate LEED rating system requirement for specific project.

Regional Manufacturing MR Credit 5.1 and 5.2

Intent: To increase demand for building materials that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation

Requirements: Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% or 20% based on cost of the total materials value.  If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) can contribute to the regional value.

The minimum percentage materials recycled for each point threshold is as follows:

Regional Materials

10% - 1 point

20% - 2 points

Product Contribution:

Recycled Clay Body: Fireclay’s recycled clay body Tile is manufactured in Aromas, California, 95004

Glass: Fireclay’s Recycled Glass tile is manufactured in Aromas, California, 95004

Brick: Fireclay Glazed Thin Brick is manufactured in San Rafael, California 94901 and glazed and fired in Aromas California, 95004

Environmental Quality

Environmental Quality IEQ Credit 4.3: Low-Emitting Flooring Systems

Intent: To reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that is odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants

Requirements: For Option 1: Fourth bulleted item updated April 14, 2010 per UsGBC addendum: “Mineral-based finish flooring products such as tile, masonry, terrazzo, and cut stone without integral organic-based coatings and sealants and unfinished/untreated solid wood flooring qualify for credit without any IAQ testing requirements.

Product Contributions: Fireclay products are all VOC-free due to being fired at temperatures of 2,014 fahrenheit.  This heating process eliminates any possible VOCs in the final product thereby leaving the tile inert.
