Tile School: Everything You Need to Know About Ordering Add-ons
When placing a tile order one of the most important things you can do is plan ahead. Installing tile can be challenging, so the more prepared you are going in to the process the better. Along with hiring the right tile installer, you can make sure the process goes smoothly by determining the right amount of tile for your project, as well as how much extra tile you should order to prevent having to order more.
But in the case that you do need to order add-ons, we're here to help. Below we'll talk you through how much extra tile to order when placing your original order, and what to do and expect if you need to order more.
Why you should order extra
We highly recommend adding an extra 10% overage, or Attic Stock, to your tile order to accommodate discrepancies that can often occur during the installation process and avoid incurring additional fees. This will cover any loss of material during cutting, job site jostling, and any mistakes that are made during installation. Most often when a unique, handmade tile cut has been made, the remaining piece of tile cannot be used anywhere else, resulting in fewer tiles than expected. Having a safety net of extra tile makes the installation process go much smoother, and is done right, the first time. We especially recommend ordering extras when dealing with specialty shapes that will require special cuts, or when the area you are tiling has certain architectural details that will require more cutting.
Add-ons and Attic Stock
In the event that you need to make an add-on order, you will have 30 days to request an add-on from the time you received your original order. Be prepared to send us a control sample to begin production. You will also be charged a $100 set-up fee. Due to the handcrafted nature of our tile, we are unable to guarantee that the color or exact sizing will be the same. Standard quoted lead times will apply to add-on orders. If you need your add-on order sooner than the quoted lead time, a 30% rush fee will be charged.
Any tile that’s left over can be saved for minor repairs down the road or contribute to other home projects.
How to determine how much tile to order
So let's say you are ordering our Ogee shape for you backsplash. First you will need to figure out how much tile you need to cover the area base don your dimensions. Let's say your backsplash is 3 feet x 9 feet. To calculate your square footage simply multiply the 2 dimensions. 3 ft x 9 ft = 27 square feet. So now you know the minimum amount of tile you should order is 27 SF. Now, 10% of 27 SF is 2.7 SF, always round up, so in this case you should order 3 SF extra, 30 SF total.
What about commercial and larger projects?
The 10% rule doesn't always apply to larger jobs such as commercial applications. 10% of a large job will probably end up being too much, around 5% should do the trick. If you're unsure our design associates are happy to help figure out exactly how much extra you should order.

Your original order comes with a complimentary return shipping label for your convenience. Due to the handcrafted nature of our tile, we are unable to guarantee that the color or exact sizing will be the same.
