According to Martin, it all starts with preparation. “To perfectly install floor tile, the preparation is critical and will determine the outcome of the floor,” he says. 1. Substrate Preparation
The first step in any successful tile floor installation is to ensure the substrate, or base layer, is completely flat. “Floor tile installation is all about qualifying the substrate before any tile is laid,” says Martin. A skilled installer will check the floor with either a laser or level, making sure it is no more than 1/4" out of flatness over 10 feet. This step is crucial because any inconsistencies in the substrate can lead to problems down the road.

2. Cement Backer Board Installation
To ensure a stable and moisture-resistant foundation for your tile, cement backer board is usually installed over the substrate. This prevents moisture from penetrating and causing tile or grout damage. This step is especially important in areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms or kitchens.
