When it comes to floor tile, functionality is key. Our matte finishes boast a slip-resistant rating, with a DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) value above .42, meaning they’re suitable for both residential and commercial floors. Whether you’re installing tiles in a busy family kitchen or a high-traffic retail space, you can rest assured that our tiles will perform beautifully.
Floor tile installation might look straightforward in a YouTube video, but in reality, it’s a highly skilled process. As Martin Brookes, Director of Fireclay Tile Installation, explains: “The investment in floor tile alone can be great, and doing a DIY project without the proper tools and skill can lead to frustration and a rework, potentially costing thousands of dollars and delays.” Hiring a professional ensures that your tile is installed correctly the first time, saving you the headache and potential costs of fixing mistakes.
Fireclay Tile is proud to offer professional installation services in select markets, with plans to expand nationwide. Our installers are trained not only in the art of tile installation but specifically in the nuances of Fireclay Tile products. “Our installers are continually educated by manufacturers such as Schluter Systems and Laticrete on how to work with their products,” Martin adds. This expertise ensures that your floor tile is installed according to the highest industry standards, guaranteeing a floor that’s as durable as it is beautiful.
The Tile Floor Installation Process
So, what exactly goes into installing a flawless tile floor? According to Martin, it all starts with preparation. “To perfectly install floor tile, the preparation is critical and will determine the outcome of the floor,” he says. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how a professional tile installer tackles the process—giving you insight into what to expect if you’re considering installing tile yourself or hiring a pro.
1. Substrate Preparation
The first step in any successful tile floor installation is to ensure the substrate, or base layer, is completely flat. “Floor tile installation is all about qualifying the substrate before any tile is laid,” says Martin. A skilled installer will check the floor with either a laser or level, making sure it is no more than 1/4" out of flatness over 10 feet. This step is crucial because any inconsistencies in the substrate can lead to problems down the road.
2. Cement Backer Board Installation
To ensure a stable and moisture-resistant foundation for your tile, cement backer board is usually installed over the substrate. This prevents moisture from penetrating and causing tile or grout damage. This step is especially important in areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms or kitchens.
3. Laying Out the Tiles
Before the adhesive is applied, the layout of the tile is discussed and confirmed. According to Martin, “Layout needs to be discussed—there could be multiple ways to arrange the tiles, and it’s important to have the client see the options and sign off on the desired one.” A professional installer will ensure that the tiles are laid out to complement the space, taking into account things like grout lines and symmetry.
4. Applying the Thin Set
The next step is applying a high-quality thin-set adhesive to the backer board. This is where the importance of a skilled installer really comes into play. Martin emphasizes using a thin set that meets or exceeds ANSI A118.4 standards. This adhesive ensures strong bonding and prevents shrinkage, which is key to achieving a flat, even floor. The installer will spread the thin set evenly across the substrate before pressing the tiles into place, ensuring 80% coverage for interior spaces and 95% for exterior and wet areas.
5. Installing the Tiles
Once the thin set is applied, the tiles are pressed into place. This step requires precision, as the installer must ensure each tile is level and aligned according to the chosen layout. If you’re tackling this yourself, be prepared to spend plenty of time adjusting tiles and checking for evenness—this is where the most mistakes tend to happen in DIY projects.
6. Grouting the Tile
After the tiles have set, it’s time to grout the joints. Martin advises cleaning all grout joints to at least three-quarters of the tile depth before applying the grout. This allows for better color consistency in the finished grout. Depending on the type of tile, a grout release or sealer may be applied before grouting to prevent staining. Once the grout has dried, the floor is ready for use!
Step-by-Step Tile Floor Installation Guide
If you’re feeling up to the challenge and decide to install your Fireclay floor tile yourself, here’s a simplified step-by-step guide to help you through the process (find more details here). If you ever feel unsure, we always recommend working with a professional.
Prepare Your Surface: Make sure your floor is clean, dry, and level. If it’s uneven, use a leveling compound to correct the surface before continuing.
Install Cement Backer Board: Lay down cement backer board to provide a solid, moisture-resistant foundation for your tile.
Plan Your Layout: Dry lay your tiles to map out the design and make sure everything fits. Double-check your measurements!
Mix and Apply Thin Set: Follow the instructions to mix your thin set, then spread it evenly over a small section of the floor.
Lay the Tiles: Press the tiles firmly into the thin set, making sure they’re level and aligned with your layout.
Grout and Clean: After the thin set has dried, apply grout between the tiles. Wipe away excess grout and let it dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
