Project Spotlight: Secret Agent PR x Simply Grove

By Kali |

All images: Laure Joliet

With the aim of a modern and cheerful look, Kirsten Grove of Simply Grove designed an office space for her friends at Secret Agent PR that would reflect their fun work environment. Wanting to add something to the space that felt timeless, Kirsten chose our handpainted Old Cairo tiles in our Black and White Motif. She says, "When I first saw Old Cairo, it reminded me of a vintage rug that could tell stories from life's experiences. Placing it up the wall as the backsplash exceeded my expectations! It’s stunning." We couldn't agree more. Scroll down to learn more about Kirsten, this office space and of course, the tile...

First a bit about Kristen of Simply Grove...
I am an interior stylist/blogger, living in Boise Idaho with my husband, 2 children and 2 dogs. I have always had a passion for interior design and feel fortunate to be doing exactly what I love to do.

My style can be described as…An eclectic mix of scandinavian, mid century and art deco design. I really am inspired by so many different styles, but always come back to a clean, minimalist look.
My design philosophy is…Creating comfortable, timeless spaces is way more important than creating trendy spaces that feel harsh and cold.
I got my start…In my early 20’s I started working with builders, picking out finishes for new construction homes. From there I started taking on clients, mostly family members and friends, and then things evolved into a business.
I find inspiration in…Travels. I’m always inspired when I travel. Just seeing how other cultures and communities live their lives is a constant reminder that design looks different to every person.
I can't live without…Good lighting! Bad lighting ruins everything.
My best design advice would be…Invest in a good sofa. You use it the most! Chairs and coffee tables are a dime a dozen. Spend your money on your couch.
I love tile because....It adds color and personality to any room! It creates beauty in even the most boring space.
My favorite tile color is....I’m loving deep blues and greens right now. Anything with moody tones is a winner.

Now onto The Secret Agent PR office....

Can you tell me about the space? Is there a story behind the project you'd like to share?
I became friends with the ladies of Secret Agent PR, so when they asked me to design their new office space in Chinatown, I jumped at the chance! They are so fun and vibrant, which makes my job really easy. Together we were able to really figure out their needs and desires. They wanted a fun work environment that didn’t feel too serious for their clients, who are equally as cool as Secret Agent.

How was the design process for an office space different from a residential one?
I had to keep in mind that there are specific requirements in a commercial space. Because I mostly do residential, I asked lots of questions to understand what was needed for this space. But as far as the style goes, it felt like I was designing a residential space.

What type of aesthetic were you going for?
Clean, modern yet colorful and cheery!

There are boho moments and modern minimalist moments. I love that combination!

How did you come up with your color scheme/design?
I knew the ladies love color, so no color is a bad color to them. We incorporated every color of the rainbow!

What made you go for handpainted? And Old Cairo in particular?
I wanted to add something to the space that felt timeless. When I first saw Old Cairo, it reminded me of a vintage rug that could tell stories from life's experiences. Placing it up the wall as the backsplash exceeded my expectations! It’s stunning.

How did the installation process go? Did you face any challenges?
Installation was easy and to the point! Our contractor got it done within just a few days.

Lastly, which of our colors/patterns are you hoping to use on any future projects?
Diamond Contour is taking my breathe away! I think it would look stunning in a restaurant or bathroom.
