Meet the Design Consultants: Robin Milliken

By Lindsey |

Working on a project in New England or the Midwest? Meet your Design Consultant, Robin Milliken!

As the daughter of a landscaper and ceramicist, Robin has always had an appreciation for the natural world, craft, and design. Robin's role as a Design Consultant for Fireclay Tile has allowed her to combine these sensibilities as she helps clients find something special and unique for their homes. Keep reading to learn more about Robin, her background, and favorite Fireclay products and projects. A bit about me...
My family is very creative, so getting into the arts wasn't so much of a decision as it was fate. I've always been drawn to color and pattern, and growing up in Portland, Oregon where nature never feels far away added a love of the natural world to my aesthetic and personal ethos. After studying Printmaking in the Pacific Northwest, I decided it was time for a change of scene and moved to Oakland where I started learning about all of the amazing artisans making work in California. Enter Fireclay! Working here I get to combine my aesthetic sensibilities with my love of craft and natural materials - and share that enthusiasm with others!

My style is...
Drawn to many different aesthetics, the common thread between them is creating a dialogue between inside and outside. I like lots of wood, colors pulled from landscapes, with an eclectic mix of bits and bobs added in. In my home there's little nature collections everywhere, open windows, and lots of artwork. I'm also a big sucker for old buildings-- delighting in little built in shelves, wood trim, and well-worn floors.

My favorite Fireclay products...

1). 1x4" Straight Set in Hunter Green - Love the way this shape and setting creates visual texture, adding the dark green is a great way to bring an outdoors vibe back inside! This combo's matte finish, small format, and recycled clay base make it very practical for any application without sacrificing looks.

2). Feldspar 6x6" - This warm white glaze is so soft and pleasing. It's the perfect neutral for any space, and has enough subtle variation from tile to tile to stay interesting. I cannot emphasize enough how gorgeous it is in natural light!

3). Antique Mini Star & Cross - You can't get a look more "Fireclay Tile" than Antique. Its translucent glaze showcases the red clay underneath, and reveals spectacular variation.

My Favorite Fireclay Projects...

1) Backsplash Gone Plaid - Flawlessly combining warm saturated blues and a smart pattern with natural wood accents, this design is fun!

2) Modern Black Brick Fireplace Surround - This fireplace is dark and dramatic but the white in the rest of the room keeps it bright and fresh, all I want is to cozy up there with a book and tea. Also Molly and Kevin (the design + build team at Brasstacks) are just so nice to work with and have great taste!

3) Chase Daniel Debuts His New Bathroom - I know I said I love Hunter Green but it's so hard to choose just one green! And with a design like this you don't have to. These glossy glazes have great variation and harmonize perfectly.
