Martin Brookes, our Director of Installation, emphasizes. Choosing Fireclay Tile Installation means you can relax and enjoy the transformation, knowing your tile is in the most capable hands.
Prepping for Installation: Walls, Tools, and Tiles
Now, let's roll up our sleeves and get ready for the main event! We pulled in our Director of Installation, Martin Brookes, to give us his best tips for installing backsplash tile. “Before you begin, always do a dry layout,” Martin advises, “This allows you to visualize the design and make any necessary adjustments. Ensure your countertop is level and that there are no unmanageable gaps between the countertop and the wall.”
Next, you’ll want to prepare your walls and ensure the surface is clean, dry, and level. “Assess your substrate,” Martin says. “Is it flat? Is it suitable for tile, or do you need to add a membrane?" If needed, install a backer board to create a smooth and stable foundation for your tile. For Glass Tile, Martin recommends using "a crack isolation membrane and a thinset specifically designed for glass tile" to ensure durability and prevent future issues.
Next, gather your tools and materials. You'll need a tile cutter for those inevitable cuts around outlets and switches, a notched trowel to apply adhesive to the wall, a grout float for spreading the grout, spacers for consistent grout lines, and a level to keep everything straight and true. Keep in mind that Glass Tile often requires specialized cutting tools like a high-quality glass tile blade or hole saws. Don't forget safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself during the installation process!

Installing Your Tile Backsplash: A Step-by-Step Guide
With your pre-installation checklist complete, let's dive into the step-by-step process:
Prepare the Adhesive: Choose the appropriate adhesive for your tile type and follow the manufacturer instructions to the letter.
Apply Adhesive to the Wall: Working in manageable sections, apply the adhesive to the wall using a notched trowel, ensuring even coverage.
Place the First Tile: Start at a prominent spot, such as the center of the wall or above the stove. Press the first tile into the wall with a slight twisting motion, leaving a 1/8-inch expansion gap at the countertop.
Install the Remaining Tiles: Continue placing tiles, using spacers to maintain those picture-perfect grout lines. Cut tiles as needed to fit around outlets and switches, and remember those 45-degree angle cuts for corners!
Grout the Tiles: Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a grout float to press the grout into the spaces between the tiles, working diagonally. Wipe away excess grout with a damp sponge.
Seal the Grout: Once the grout has cured, apply a grout sealer to protect it from stains and moisture. This is especially important in a kitchen environment.
Finishing Touches: Install new outlet covers and switch plates that complement your tile design. Step back and admire your beautifully installed tile backsplash!

Cutting Tile: Tips and Techniques
Cutting tile can seem daunting, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be easily managed. A tile cutter is suitable for basic straight cuts, while a wet saw offers more precision and versatility for different types of cuts (including those tricky curved cuts around pipes). Always mark the tile carefully before cutting to ensure accuracy, and remember those safety glasses.
