Susanne Redfield

Creative Consultant

Tile designer and ceramist Susanne Kibak Redfield merges her Danish roots and love of traditional crafts with a modern sense of restraint that brings just enough to the design without going over the top. After graduating from the University of California Santa Cruz in 1981, Susanne started her own business making ceramic tiles. She introduced Kibak Tile through Kneedler Fauchere, a revered interior showroom to the trade, then spent twenty five years in a successful relationship with Ann Sacks. "I began hearing about Fireclay Tile, their sustainable story and youthful energy really captured my imagination, I absolutely wanted to be part a company that really cares about tomorrow. Designing product for Fireclay Tile is energizing, truly inspirational.

Trend to Try: Handpainted As Decorative Wall Installations

Our Contemporary pattern Diamond Contour in a Dark Motif

We love a classic subway tile backsplash just as much as the next person, but we also know there are endless design possibilities too often looked over for more traditional alternatives.  With the launch of our New Handpainted Collections we are reminded that tile can be used in just about any room, and despite it's highly durable characteristics, doesn't always need to serve a practical use.  Whether you want to make a bold statement in your kitchen or your living room fireplace is in dire need of a face lift, Handpainted tile can be a unique and long-lasting way to add decorative appeal to your space.

Sized slightly larger than our Classic Cuerda Seca Collection, our Contemporary, Moroccan and Mediterranean designs come in both 8x8 and 6x12 sizes, and create captivating repeat patterns when used on a larger scale. These tiles also have a rectified edge, meaning they have a smaller grout line, preventing any unwanted distraction from the overall design.

Our San Francisco Showroom entry boasts a graphic Handpainted wall, making a strong first impression on our visitors as soon as they walk through the door.  The Contemporary design, Diamond Contour, focuses on clean, geometric lines and a neutral colorway, creating strong visual interest without overwhelming the space.

Instead of restraining yourself with small areas of patterned tile here and there try covering an entire bathroom wall with your favorite design.  This bathroom uses a tile with subtle hints of blue and green to pull out and highlight then warm wood bathtub.

Handpainted tile can look like a one of a kind work of art when used as a small accent.  We love how this living room frames their fireplace from floor to ceiling with a cool blue patterned tile, providing just enough pattern to become the center of attention in the room.
